The marble goby ( Oxyeleotris marmorata ) is a freshwater fish from the Butidae family and probably the largest representative of the goby-like (Gobiiformes). It occurs in Thailand in the river basin of the Mekong and Mae Nam Chao Phraya , in Indochina , on the Malay Peninsula , the Philippines and in Indonesia .

features

The marble goby is on average 30 centimeters long, but reaches a maximum length of 65 centimeters. Their bodies are elongated, round in cross-section and only flattened at the tail fin stalk. The head is large and flattened, the mouth is sloping upwards, the lower jaw protrudes. The gill cover has no thorn. The animals show a different color depending on their origin, the incident light and their condition. The basic color is gray-brown, more rarely yellow-green. The underside is a little lighter. Numerous blurred spots, which can also run together to cross ties, pattern the sides of the body and justify the German and scientific species name (Latin marmoratus means “marbled”). The female spots are less clear. The fins are brownish to gray-brown and darkly spotted. Adult marble gobies usually show a uniform dark brown.

Way of life

The marble goby lives in rivers, swamps, reservoirs and canals and also migrates to flooded forests and other floodplains during the rainy season. It is crepuscular and feeds on small fish, crustaceans , insects and mollusks and is a substrate spawner . The voracious animals can eat as much per day as they weigh themselves.

use

The marble goby is an excellent food fish, is bred in ponds in Thailand in particular and is marketed in a large part of East Asia. Their meat fetched high prices when exported.
