Standstill (church maintenance)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In German-speaking Switzerland, a committee of the Protestant-Reformed regional church , which together with the pastor advised on upcoming church affairs and made decisions, was called a standstill .

The standstill had to watch over the church attendance, ensured calm and order during the service, had to keep a watchful eye over marriages and children and tried to bring idlers, drinkers and gamblers back on the right path.

The term standstill comes from the fact that its members had to stand at the baptismal font in the church on the first Sunday of the month after the service and wait until they could confer with the pastor. In the second half of the 19th century, the standstill was replaced by church maintenance.
