The Stone o 'Scar (also called Stone o' Scar , Stone of Scar or Saville Stone ) is a large boulder near the House of Scar on Burness, the north peninsula of the Orkney island of Sanday in Scotland . It was originally located about a mile (1.6 km) away on Coos Moo, a field belonging to the Houses of Saville.

The boulder near Scar Farm

Between 1879 and 1880 the 14 ton stone was moved with great effort with the intention of positioning it near the Houses of Scar. After a while, the vehicle collapsed under the load and the stone was abandoned. Parts of the vehicle are said to have been visible in the 20th century.

Legend

Local lore has it that the stone was thrown from the island of Eday by an angry witch whose daughter ran off to Sanday with her lover .

The idea of positioning well-known menhirs by a witch or a giant is very common on Orkney. One example is the Fingersteen on Rousay .
