The fountain was commissioned in 1932 and inaugurated on June 7, 1936. The Weimar art professor Ludwig Nick was recruited as a designer and site manager, and this fountain was a matter close to his heart. The roughly life-size stork and the water pipes decorated with small animal figurines were made in the Berlin art foundry Hermann Noak . The well surround and the column are made of Oberdorla limestone , the stone carving was done by the Mihla company Schlothauer. The construction of the well was carried out by the Gerstung company Linß.
