The stork tower

The Storchenturm is a medieval defense and prison tower on the edge of the old town of Eisenach in Thuringia . It is located in the west of Eisenach's old town on the edge of the old cemetery .

history

From the twelfth century the Eisenach city wall was built and with it the stork tower as a watchtower around 1200. In the centuries that followed, the tower also served as a prison. The most famous inmate of the prison was Fritz Erbe , a supporter of the Anabaptist movement , who was incarcerated here from January 1533 to 1540 until he was transferred to the Wartburg .

With the abandonment of the Eisenach city fortifications, the stork tower also lost its function, but remained in ruins. In 1982 the ruin was secured and rebuilt, and in 1996 another renovation took place. A plaque commemorates Fritz Erbe's fate.
