Road distance
The road distance describes the distance between buildings and fences and traffic routes.
In Switzerland, a separate road spacing ordinance was issued in some cases, such as the ordinance on the spacing of walls, fences and plants from streets . Otherwise, the regulations are anchored in the building regulations for roads and paths.
In Germany and Austria, the distance between the streets is determined by the alignment of the street in the development plan of the property, which is differentiated from the permitted building alignment . The difference creates a distinguishable area of land that can be built over , so that the buildings have a minimum distance from the street and the fence as defined in the development plan. The development with enclosures, living fences and the use with overhangs on the street alignment are determined in the building codes of the federal states and municipalities.
While the building codes usually prescribe a minimum distance to the street, the respective postal service can prescribe a maximum distance. In the German-speaking area, the property boundary defined in each case is used to place the house mailbox; only in the case of multi-family houses, a different placement in the staircase is permitted. In the USA and other sparsely populated regions there are decrees that the mailbox can be used without getting out of the mail vehicle.
