When Strahlenthyreoiditis is a rarely occurring thyroiditis ( thyroiditis ) as a result of radiation therapy in the neck area or radioiodine therapy .

The clinical picture is characterized by swelling of the thyroid gland and tenderness in the thyroid bed. The inflammation can also lead to a temporary overactive thyroid gland ( hyperthyroidism ). The disease is self-limiting, i.e. if the triggering therapy is discontinued, the symptoms cease after a few days to a few weeks.

Because of this course, treatment is usually not necessary. If necessary, symptomatic therapy with cooling (ice tie), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (analgesic and anti-inflammatory) or glucocorticoids (anti-inflammatory, decongestant) can be carried out.
