Radiant heating surface

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The part of the heating surface of a steam boiler to which the heat is transferred mainly by thermal radiation is referred to as the radiant heating surface .

Radiant heating surfaces in steam locomotive boilers

With the first steam locomotives up to the end of the Länderbahn era, there was practically no radiant heating surface on locomotives from southern Germany. Since the flue gases in the long heating pipes are subjected to a strong cooling, a water-flushed fire box was installed, especially in the locomotives of the Prussian State Railways , which led to a significant proportion of the radiant heating surface. The model was based on locomotives from the USA , in which combustion chamber boilers were standard at an early stage. In the case of stationary steam engines, it was quickly recognized that heat radiation makes a significant contribution to the generation of steam.

In locomotives from the time of the standard locomotives , a water-flushed firebox was state of the art. A combustion chamber would have reduced the length of the heating pipes. From the Reko and new building boilers of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (1945–1993) , only combustion chamber boilers with the largest proportion of radiant heating surface were produced.

In practice, the radiant heating surface is the area of the combustion chamber and the fire box around which the boiler feed water flows and thus contributes to the generation of steam through thermal radiation.
