Straton II (Punjab)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Straton II. Was an Indo-Greek king who lived around 25 BC. Ruled in eastern Punjab until approx. 10 AD .

Straton II seems to have been the last Indo-Greek ruler and certainly had to struggle with the Indo-Scythians during his reign . Its coinage is considered to be the worst of the Indo-Greek rulers. Today he is only known from these coins, on which his son Straton (III.) Philopator sometimes appears, with whom he therefore ruled together. His coins show Athena on the reverse , the ruler is referred to as Soter , i.e. savior , on the obverse , which probably expresses more of a wish than a fact.

Straton II was probably defeated by the Indo-Scythian ruler Rajuvula , with which the Indo-Greek empires came to an end. If the reconstruction of the events is correct, then it is also about the last ruler of Hellenism .
