Stratoscope I.

Stratoscope is the name of two balloon-borne reflector telescopes that were used between 1957 and 1971 to conduct examinations in the visible light and infrared range of the sun , galaxies and red giants . The initiator of the US Stratoscope projects was Martin Schwarzschild . Stratoscope I had a mirror diameter of 30.48 centimeters. The successor device Stratoscope II had a mirror diameter of 91.4 centimeters and a weight of 3.5 tons. Both were operated remotely. Photographic films were initially used as image detectors, later television cameras.
