Opened on 13 June 1908 Malheur National Forest is a National Forest in eastern US -Bundesstaats Oregon in the mountains Blue Mountains . The approximately 6900  km² area includes forests, deserts, lakes and grassland . It begins at about 1200 meters above sea level and extends to the 2754 m high peak of the Strawberry Mountains. It is named after the Malheur River .

The national forest is operated by the United States Forest Service , a division of the US Department of Agriculture . In 1964 the area around Strawberry Mountain was designated as Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and in 1984 a region in the east of the area around Bullrun Rock was designated as Monument Rock Wilderness . Both wilderness areas are unaffected by human interference. The two protected areas Vinegar Hill-Indian Rock Scenic Area and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge are also in the area.

particularities

In 2000, the giant was due to an initially mysterious forest decline mycelium of Armillaria -Pilzes ( Armillaria ostoyae, dark honey fungus ) discovered. It extends over an area of ​​around nine square kilometers (900 hectares), making it the largest known creature in the world in this regard. Its age is estimated to be 2,400 years and its mass to be around 600 tons.

There are two wilderness areas in the Malheur National Forest.

  • Strawberry Mountain Wilderness (278 km²)
  • Monument Rock Wilderness (79 km²), partially located within the Wallowa – Whitman National Forest
