Streif (noble family)
The Streif (also Straif , Straiff ) were a knightly ministerial family of the diocese of Chur and the barons of Vaz , of which 15 representatives are documented before 1352. In 1270 the brothers Otto and Conrad Streif are mentioned. At times the family owned extensive real estate, such as the castles Unter- and Ober-Sansch ( Kapfenstein ), Strahlegg near Fideris, Falkenstein near Igis and, since 1348, through Albrecht Streif over the Neu-Aspermont Castle as well as numerous estates and Alps in Schanfigg, in Chur, Davos, Churrätien (Prättigau) and Oberhalbstein.
In 1403 the entire family property in Churwalden, including the Strahlegg fortress, passed to Count Friedrich VII of Toggenburg , while the Streif estate in Chur and Oberhalbstein is documented until 1467. In the second half of the 15th century the family disappeared in Graubünden; likewise in the same period in the city of St. Gallen, where it appears for the first time in 1304, partly with the same coat of arms.
The Streiff family in Glarnerland
The Streiff, who, apart from their work in the civil service, also made a significant contribution to industrial development, have been documented in the Glarnerland since the beginning of the 16th century and are presumably related to the eponymous ministerial family of the bishops of Chur and the barons of Vaz, the disappeared from Graubünden in the second half of the 15th century.
