The Stridsvagn 74 ( Strv 74 ) is a Swedish main battle tank from the 1950s.
history
The vehicle was essentially a further development of the Stridsvagn m / 42 tank , which was obsolete in the 1950s and was retired from the armored forces in the same decade. It was planned to use the Stridsvagn 74 as a complement to the newly acquired Stridsvagn 81 . In the 1970s, the Strv 74 was gradually replaced by the Stridsvagn 101 (also a Centurion variant) and the Stridsvagn 103 . The tank was eventually used as an infantry support vehicle. Active service with the Swedish Army lasted from 1958 to 1984. The turrets were used as coastal artillery pieces after they were retired.
The Stridsvagn 74 existed in the versions Strv 74 H (with hydraulic transmission, 155 copies) and Strv 74 V , (with mechanical transmission, 70 copies).
technology
Instead of scrapping the 225 Stridsvagn m / 42 TM, TH and TV, the decision was made to continue using the chassis and to install a newly developed turret with a 75 mm high-speed cannon on it. The cannon was based on an anti-aircraft gun. The gearbox and the engine were only slightly modified from the Strv m / 42 . Wider crawlers were used and a separate electric motor was installed for the tower rotation. A manual rotation of the tower was still possible in all cases.
