The Stridsvagn m / 42 ( Strv m / 42 ) is a Swedish tank from the 1940s.

history

The Stridsvagn m / 42 was developed from the Lago project, which the Swedish armaments company Landsverk had planned for Hungary. Originally it consisted of a tank of about 16 tons, which was supposed to be armed with a 47 mm cannon and three machine guns.

The forerunner was the Landsverk L-60 with a welded hull and inclined front armor plates. The armament of the L-60 consisted of a 20 mm cannon. The L-60 was taken over by Hungary and introduced into the Hungarian army there under the designation 38M Toldi . In Sweden it was used under the designation Stridsvagn m / 38 with a 37 mm gun. In terms of its armament, the L-60 was comparable to the German Panzerkampfwagen II or the Russian T-60 . Compared to the Stridsvagn m / 38, the Stridsvagn m / 42 was equipped with a redesigned tower and a longer and larger hull. The tank was equipped with six rollers on each side.

In 1941 a tank commission was formed in Sweden to improve the organization and equipment of the tank units. This recommended the introduction of a new heavy type of tank of around 20 t. In order to meet this requirement as quickly as possible, the project Lago near Landsverk was used. It was revised and strengthened and implemented as Lago II – IV. The 282 vehicles delivered from April 1943 to January 1945 were given the name Stridsvagn m / 42 (Strv m / 42) by the Swedish armed forces. The Stridsvagn m / 42 was delivered to the heavy tank companies in the tank brigades of the Swedish army. The tank could have stood up to its Soviet and German counterparts. The tank remained in service in this role until 1957, when it was replaced by the Stridsvagn 81 . The two-engine carriages (TH and TV versions) were converted from 1957 to 1960 in Stridsvagn 74 , which then replaced the Stridsvagn m / 38, m / 39 and m / 40 in the light companies of the tank brigades. Single- engine wagons (version EH) were used by the infantry as Infanterikanonvagn 73 (Ikv 73) after slight changes .
