Straw (unit)
Straw was an ancient measure for different things.
The dimensional chain for straw was general:
- 1 Wall = 80 shock = 48 Fimm = 160 Moller / Mollen = 4800 Schöfen / Bund
- 6 wall = 1 straw
Bremen
- 1 load = 20 straw
- 1 straw = 125 smoked herrings or kippers (120)
Hildesheim
- 1 load = 20 straw kippers
Stralsund
- 1 straw = 6 walls = 480 shock (bundle of straw)
Rostock
- 1 Fimm straw = 100 bunches (1 w = 10 pounds (Rostocker))
Nuremberg
- 1 Schober of straw = 6 Schöberlein = 60 bundles
Szczecin
- 1 straw = 6 walls = 480 shock (bundle of straw)
- 1 Moller = 40 pieces / bunch of Noback straw = 30 pieces
Pomerania
- 1 moller = 30 pieces / bunch of straw
- 1 Fimm = 100 Schöfe (Schöf / Schof: term for a prepared bundle of deck straw)
The bundle of decking straw was supposed to cover 1 square foot of roof area and was 1 foot thick.
