Strombolicchio |
The Strombolicchio (little Stromboli) is in front of the volcanic island of Stromboli , one of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily , as a tower-like cliff on the northeast coast about 1.5 kilometers away. The small island has a length of 131 meters, a maximum width of 52 meters, and a floor plan of around 3500 m². It is the remains of an old volcanic chimney filling . The Strombolicchio volcano was probably a predecessor of today's Stromboli volcano or an old subsidiary volcano, the eruption of which took place 360,000 years ago. The Strombolicchio rock is one of the oldest in Stromboli.
The originally 56 m high cliff was leveled to 49 m when the lighthouse was built in 1926. A staircase with 211 steps leads to the platform.
