history

Reactor R2 in Studsvik.

Studsvik was founded in 1947 under the name AB Atomenergi and was under the Swedish government after the establishment. The purpose of the company, which was jointly held by the Swedish state, individual public and private utilities and industrial companies, was the development, construction and operation of research reactors. AB Atomenergi designed and built Sweden's first nuclear reactor, the R1, which went into operation in July 1954. It was operated for research purposes until 1970.

The company was also involved in the development of the heavy water reactor for Ågesta Nuclear Power Plant , the first Swedish nuclear power plant to generate electrical energy. The Ågesta reactor was also supposed to supply material for the Swedish nuclear weapons program . The Ranstad uranium mine between Skövde and Falköping was also operated to produce fuel . In 1978 the company was changed to Studsvik Energiteknik AB and the final name Studsvik AB was adopted in 1987. This renaming was based on the town of Studsvik near Nyköping, where the company's first test reactors were built. In May 2001 the company went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

Studsvik offers software solutions for the design and planning of nuclear reactors and consulting services for the dismantling of nuclear facilities, radiation protection and waste management for nuclear waste . The company carries out research on nuclear fuels on behalf of customers and plans and accompanies the transport of highly radioactive material by land, sea and air. The Studsvik Isotopes division supplies radiation sources to medical and industrial users. The products are assembled in our own hot cells and transferred to the customer. The medical technology company Elekta is also one of the customers . Furthermore, consulting services are offered to companies in the oil and gas sector and the other coal and steel industry that relate to the handling of natural radiation sources.
