Hour circle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An hour circle is a great circle on the celestial sphere that runs through the celestial poles . Each hour circle thus intersects the celestial equator vertically. A circle of hours on the celestial sphere can be imagined as analogous to the degrees of longitude on the terrestrial globe.

In particular, the hour circle of a particular star or celestial object is the great circle that runs through the celestial poles and this object.
