"Sub Templum" is the second album released in 2008 by the British drone doom band Moss .

Emergence

The album was released on Rise Above Records on May 26, 2008, both on CD and vinyl, around three years after its debut. The producer was Jus Oborn, guitarist and singer for the British doom metal band Electric Wizard .

To a large extent, the album is based on Masonic motifs, the content of the term Lux E Tenebris , in English "Light from the Dark", was significant, but it also took on Subterranean in the cover design, the title and the lyrics by a tattoo artist the band used masonic elements.

There was no tour for the release, only at an event for the twentieth anniversary of Rise Above did the band play some tracks from the album.

style

The music on the album is mostly classified as Sludge , Drone or Doom Metal in general . The band composed the album together, the lyrics were written by singer Olly Pearson. Unlike their debut album, Cthonic Rites , the pieces were not improvised, but composed through and rehearsed in advance. The band placed particular emphasis on being more structured and song-oriented. As a new element, the band integrated a Hammond organ into the group sound, but also clear vocals. The band denies musical influences, citing “marijuana and drugs” as an important influence, especially horror films in terms of atmosphere.

reception

Most of the criticism characterized the album as musically simple and particularly emphasized the lack of songwriting. Greg Strato from Allmusic described the album with the words " the songs don't follow any structure and simply don't go anywhere ".

The appreciation, however, was also positive. Among other things, the strong atmospheric power of the album was recognized and the extreme musical approach was praised. The résumé was repeatedly found that “you can either love them idolatrously or just hate them abysmally” .
