history

The lyric self justifies wearing sunglasses at night with the fact that he can watch his beloved, whom he suspects of cheating on him.

It was released on May 14, 1983. The song is one of the typical New Wave hits of the 1980s, but the combination of the synthesizer hookline , the characteristic arpeggio and the use of electric guitar sets the style. Allmusic defined the song as an “instant classic with a distinctive melody and a catchy refrain”.

In 1993 the song was used in a commercial for the car manufacturer Kia Motors . In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City , the song is played by the fictional radio station Wave 103 .

Music video

The music video reflects the idea of a "modern" police state, with scenes of Hart in prison, some without sunglasses, as well as heavily armed police officers. Shortly before the end of the video, Corey Hart is shown to a police officer in an office.
