SugarCRM is software for customer relationship management . Up to version 6.x, SugarCRM was available as an open source version. SugarCRM is based on the PHP scripting language . In addition to MySQL , IBM Db2 , Microsoft SQL Server or an Oracle DB can also be used as the database system ; the latter only in the Enterprise version.

Craig Charlton has been CEO of SugarCRM since 2019. His predecessor Larry Augustin, who was also one of the driving forces behind SourceForge , will remain with the company as chairman of the board of directors . Augustin is convinced that open source produces better software than proprietary alternatives and, above all, gives the user more control.

License and product variants

SugarCRM comprises the three partially dependent products Sugar Market, Sugar Sell and Sugar Serve, each of which covers certain areas of customer management and, due to being provided on Amazon AWS , can access a combined data pool in use.

While license fees are to be paid for the products Sugar Sell and Sugar Serve depending on the number of users, the license fee for Sugar Market is based on the number of data records used.

In addition to the Sugar Market, Sugar Sell and Sugar Serve products, there are the Sugar Enterprise and Sugar Professional versions, which have the combined functions of the Sell and Serve products and can be hosted on their own hardware.

The core products Sugar Market, Sugar Sell and Sugar Server are supplemented by the products Sugar Discover, Sugar Connect, Sugar hint and Sugar Integrate. Sugar Discover is a BI platform tailored to Sugar, Sugar Connect offers the option of direct integration into Microsoft Office 365 and Google GMail, Sugar backs up data in the Sugar core products and Sugar Integrate offers over 200 templates for connecting Sugar to third-party systems such as SAP ERP, Zendesk or for data transfer from other CRM systems.

The SugarCRM products are subject to a framework subscription agreement that prohibits open source developments.

Version 5

The Community Edition was published up to version 5.0 under the terms of the GNU GPLv3 . In mid-April 2010, SugarCRM announced that it would publish the source code from version 6.0 under the terms of Affero GPLv3 .

Version 7

Since SugarCRM 7 there has been no open source version of the software. Updates and patches for the free Community Edition were discontinued in mid-2017.

Extensions

SugarCRM itself offers, among other things, a programming interface via SOAP and REST . Further extensions and modules for SugarCRM are available from SugarForge , a platform in the style of SourceForge , which is intended to support programmers and projects in SugarCRM-relevant development. Some commercial extensions can be found on Sugar Exchange .

Spin-offs

For the CRM Vtiger , the source code of SugarCRM was originally used to develop a purely open source-based CRM. This is based on the Community Edition 6.5.x.

SuiteCRM is an open source alternative for SugarCRM 7 and is based on the current SugarCRM 6 release, supplemented by newly developed modules similar to the SugarCRM Corporate Edition.
