Sugita Yūjirō ( Japanese 杉 田 勇 次郎 , born November 6, 1900 in Shimogyō-ku in Kyoto , died August 31, 1984 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Sugita's family ran a fabric dye factory. Yūjirō graduated from the “School of Arts and Crafts Kyōto” ( 京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō ) and continued to study at the “Technical School of Painting Kyōto” ( 京都 市立 絵 画 専 門 学校 , Kyōaiga shiritsu gakkō ), from which he graduated in 1922. Then he trained under Irie Hakō ( 入 江 波光 ; 1887-1848). Already during his training he was able to exhibit the picture “Near the Sea” ( 海 近 くUmi chikaku ) at the 3rd exhibition of the artists' association “Kokuga sōsaku kyōkai” ( 国画 創作 協会 ) in 1920 .

On the 4th exhibition he showed "face" ( ), "doll" ( 人形 ), "still life" ( 静物 ) and "Luyun xuanjiang" (艫 韻 烟 江), on the 5th the picture "Summer feeling in the tree shade" ( 樹影 懐 夏 Juei kaika ), on the 6th the picture “ Magic Hut ” ( 魔 庵 Ma-an ), 1928 on the 7th “Shunbō sosai” ( 春 厨 蔬菜 ) and “Affliction” ( 暮 愁 Boshū ).

“Near the sea” represents a village in the Shima province , gray wooden houses under a gray sky. It shows the influence that Sugita's teacher Irie had on him. In the years that followed, Sugita continued to paint with great precision. In 1924 he became a provisional member, then in 1926 a permanent member of the artists' association. When the Kokuga sōsaku kyōkai disbanded in 1928, he joined the newly formed artist group "Shinjukai" ( 新 樹 会 ). However, this dissolved again after the 3rd exhibition.

In 1934, Sugita moved to Lüshun, Japan, and taught at a high school there. He then taught at a girls' high school in Dalian and saw the end of the Pacific War there . In 1947 he was able to return to Japan, then continued painting, but in seclusion.
