Suidas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suidas (Greek Σουΐδας Souḯdas ) is a legendary Greek lexicographer who is described as a Byzantine and is said to have lived in the second half of the 10th century .

For a long time he was considered to be the author of Suda , the first known alphabetically arranged collection of words and terms. Due to its size, the Suda is considered an outstanding lexical work of the Byzantine period.

Since the 1930s it has been generally accepted that Suidas is a fantasy figure. The naming is probably based on a later confusion with the title of the lexicon.
