Location of the islands

Sule Skerry and Sule Stack ( Sule Skerry and Sule Stack ) refers to a UNESCO- recognized biosphere reserve in the North Atlantic . It consists of the uninhabited islands of Sule Skerry and Sule Stack , both of which lie on the Skerry Bank and are the only elevations that pierce the sea surface.

The two remote Scottish islands lie west of the main Orkney group in the North Atlantic .

Sule Skerry is the larger of the two and transmits a built in 1895 and 1982 automated 27 m high Sule Skerry Lighthouse lighthouse . The approximately 16 hectare, 0.8 km long and maximum 12 m high island is relatively flat and consists of a mixture of bogs and rocks. The vegetation is determined by salt spray and seabird activities. Despite its smaller size of 2.9 hectares, Sule Stack is significantly higher at 36 meters and has no vegetation.

The islands are breeding colonies for large numbers of seabirds that find food in the waters off the north coast of Scotland. They are also home to a diverse population of large pelagial species, including a large number of petrel species , alken birds (puffins) and gannets ( Morus bassanus ). The reserve is one of only seven known breeding sites in the EU for wave walkers ( Oceanodroma leucorhoa ). The islands are also home to a seal colony.

The area was declared a biosphere reserve to protect typical landscapes and included in the UNESCO agreements .
