Sultans (fig)

Autumn leaves of the sultans variety.

Sultans are a variety of figs of the Ficus carica species that are mainly grown in Provence . It is known for its excellent taste and its very great winter hardiness . She is a double-bearing house fig.

Synonyms

The name of the variety has the synonyms "Black Julifeige", "Sultana", "Grosse de Juillet", "Dark Sultans", "Noir de Juillet" and "Bellone bifère".

Sultans have a strong, upright growth and can reach a height of 3 to 4 m, sometimes up to 5 m in Central Europe and becomes just as wide. The leaf is usually five-lobed and deeply incised. Petioles and buds sometimes have a reddish coating. With heavy pruning, the new shoots can reach a length of up to 2 m.

The pre-figs of the Sultans variety are teardrop-shaped and dark blue- violet to black. In Central Europe, these usually do not ripen until August - the synonym "Julifeige" refers to southern France - and usually weigh between 55 and 65 grams. The autumn figs ripen in Central Europe from September to November, are rather blue, often with a light coating, the so-called "fragrance", and weigh 35 to 45 grams. The pulp is red. The fruit tastes sweet and has an excellent aroma. Condit describes the variety as very productive ("tree very productive").

Winter hardiness

Sultans are considered to be hardy and are successfully cultivated outdoors in Germany, especially in warmer areas with a wine-growing climate, in which the autumn figs also ripen for the most part.
