history

The company was founded in 1907 under the name The Hinode Life Insurance Company . In 1925 the Sumitomo Group took over management and a year later the company was renamed Sumitomo Life Insurance Company .

In 1986 the subsidiary Sumitomo Life Insurance Agency America opened offices in New York and Los Angeles .

Sumitomo Life Insurance was the first Japanese insurance company to offer long-term care insurance (1999).

In 2011 it was announced that Sumitomo Life Insurance intends to expand into the Indian market.
