The Summer Isles ( German  Summer Islands, Scottish Gaelic Na h-Eileanan Samhraidh ) are an archipelago of 29 islands in the mouth of Loch Broom near Ullapool in the Northwest Highlands in Scotland . The islands are part of the Assynt-Coigach National Scenic Area .

Tanera Mòr

Tanera Mòr, the largest of the islands, is the only one inhabited. It used to be used as a site for a salmon farm and for other fishing activities and was temporarily uninhabited from 1991 onwards. There are a few holiday homes, a café and a private post office that has been printing its own postage stamps since 1970 (with interruptions from 2013 to 2016) after the Royal Mail stopped serving the island. In 2017 the island changed hands for just under 1.7 million pounds sterling . The new owner Ian Wace, a hedge fund manager, plans to develop the island into a holiday resort for up to 60 guests, using existing buildings and rebuilding dilapidated cottages and ruins. The island has no roads and the only recognizable path is around the sheltered bay on the east side of the island. Boats to the island leave from Achiltibuie and Ullapool .

Other larger islands are:

  • Bottle Island
  • Eilean Dubh
  • Eilean Mullagrach
  • Horse Island
  • Isle Martin
  • Isle Ristol
  • Priest Island (Eilean a 'Chlèirich)
  • Tanera Beag
