The 17-year-old Carrie Bradshaw comes from the small town of Castlebury, where she went to school until recently, to the metropolis of Manhattan to spend the summer attending a writers' seminar. Her dream is to become a writer one day, but her real plan is to study science at Brown University after the summer break.

main characters

Elizabeth Reynolds Waters (L'il): L'il is the girl who initially lives with Carrie at Peggy's. The two live in two small rooms, in Peggy's apartment, which are made of spearwood walls. Like Carrie, L'il also takes part in the writers' seminar at the New School. Carrie befriends L'il and finds out that she is a southerner who, like herself, comes from a small town. For a while, L'il is Carrie's only friend. Carrie always admires her for her talent in creative writing. When she later tried to introduce L'il to Miranda Hobbes, her attempt failed because of the two completely different views. When Carrie moves out after a while at Peggy's, she only sees L'il in the New School. When Carrie suddenly learns that L'il has dropped out of the seminar and moved back home, she calls L'il. The reason for the departure was an affair between L'il and her professor at the New School, through which L'il became pregnant but had an abortion performed.

Miranda Hobbes: Miranda is the young wife and later girlfriend of Carrie, who finds Carrie's bag in a trash can after it was stolen from Carrie at the New York train station. Carrie was very interested in becoming friends with Miranda, but Miranda is very dismissive at first. Carrie tries to meet her again and again. At some point Miranda lets herself be persuaded and a friendship develops between the two. Miranda tells Carrie that she is on therapy to finish her childhood. She is also described as a tall, slender woman with short hair dyed red.

Samantha Jones: Samantha Jones is the cousin of Carrie's former schoolmate Donna La Donna. When Carrie told Donna that she was going to be in New York for the summer, Donna gave her Samantha's number. Right at the beginning, Carrie had to pick up Samantha's number because her bag was stolen at the New York train station and she lost the address of her accommodation. Samantha nicknamed Carrie the 'Chick' because Carrie was new to town a few years younger than her. Samantha introduces Carrie to some important people in New York. At first there doesn't seem to be a real friendship between the two, but gradually the two grow closer. When Carrie is kicked out of Peggy's and Samantha moves in with her fiancé, Carrie moves into Samantha's apartment for the rest of her stay in New York. Over time, Samantha meets Miranda Hobbes. These two also get along well and a friendship develops. At the end of the book, Samantha confesses to her fiancé that she actually comes from a small town and that her family is anything but rich, so he leaves her. Because Carrie advised her to be sincere, Samantha blames her for breaking the engagement.
