Basic idea

In the middle of the 1990s, the Sun | Netscape Alliance had a number of software products on offer (messaging, portal, etc.), each of which required components in different versions. For example, the IMAP server supported the LDAP server version 4.x while the portal server already required 5.x. This meant that components had to be present several times. The aim was therefore to standardize the products and development cycles in such a way that they use the same so-called shared components. These components not only include LDAP servers, but also libraries (shared libraries).

history

Sun ONE (Open Network Environment) was the successor name of the iPlanet Suite (iPlanet was an alliance of Netscape and Sun Microsystems). In the meantime, the suite has been renamed the Sun Java Enterprise System and significantly expanded. In addition to the components mentioned above, the Sun Java ES includes a complete Identity Management Suite and CAPS products for building a service-oriented architecture (SOA).
