Superbit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Films from Columbia TriStar Home Video (owned by Sony ) have been released as premium versions on DVD-Video under the title Superbit .

Superbit DVDs contain fewer of the so-called extras (including documentaries and interviews) that are found on normal DVDs. Nevertheless, it is a normal DVD encoded in MPEG-2 and can be played in all DVD players.

The benefit of these special DVDs lies in the higher bitrate of the films, which is made possible due to the larger free space and which benefits the main film almost entirely. According to Sony, the bitrate should be almost twice as high as the normal versions of the same film. This allows a better picture quality - particularly interesting for home cinema - and also allows the choice between audio tracks in Dolby Digital (5.1) and DTS .

Sony's Superbit offer was limited to a few selected bestsellers , which had already been published in the normal DVD version in order to satisfy even the most demanding customers. Superbit DVDs were more expensive than the standard versions despite their reduced size.

Superbit DVDs should not be confused with the successor formats of DVD ( HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc ), which also aim to achieve higher picture and sound quality.

Similar DVD formats from other manufacturers are not yet known.
