A soup cup is a small, ragged bowl with a capacity of 0.2 l to 0.3 l.

It is made from earthenware , ceramic , porcelain or, rarely, from stainless steel and is usually richly decorated or simply part of tableware in addition to or as an alternative to the soup plate.

It is in two parts and consists of a cup and a saucer , with the saucer serving as a holder for the cup and a shelf for the soup spoon .

The soup cup is mainly used to consume alloyed soups and tied stews and, compared to the plate, has the advantage of keeping its contents warm longer. The contents can also be absorbed a little better with the soup spoon because of the greater depth of the vessel.

A subspecies is the smaller consommé cup, which has only one handle.

According to the rules of etiquette, only clear soups can be drunk from a soup cup, but before the cup is brought to the mouth, all solid components must be spooned out.
