Suprapatellar bulge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The suprapatellar bulge is a protrusion of the muscle belly of the vastus medialis muscle on the inside of the front of the thigh above the kneecap (patella). This bulge, which occurs when the quadriceps femoris muscle is relaxed and the knee is extended, has a two-part effect. The knee-facing portion is caused by the muscle-tendon transition. The upper part is created by a strip-shaped splitting of the fascia lata , which runs obliquely at the knee. The suprapatellar bulge extends laterally to the iliotibial band .
