Iliotibial band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The iliotibial band is anatomically a few centimeters wider band of fibers of the fascia lata , the rough connective tissue on the thigh.

The gluteus maximus muscle ( proximal part) and the tensor fasciae latae muscle radiate into this fiber strand at the level of the great roll mound ( greater trochanter ). The iliotibial tract is attached to the iliotibial tubercle ( Gerdy 's tuberculum) on the outer articular cartilage of the tibia (lateral condyle of the tibia). Here it connects with the lateral restraint ligament of the kneecap ( retinaculum patellae laterale ). Functionally, the iliotibial tract reduces the flexural stress on the femur according to the tension belt principle .

The runner's knee , the “ilio-tibial ligament syndrome” (ITBS) or “tractus syndrome” is a widespread pain syndrome that occurs due to overuse of the musculoskeletal system, especially in runners and cyclists.
