The Supreme Court of Alabama is the Supreme Court of the US state of Alabama .

composition

The Alabama Supreme Court was created by Article VI, Section 139 of the Alabama Constitution. In addition to reviewing appeals to the lower courts, the Alabama Supreme Court has the power to review disputes that exceed $ 50,000 unless another Alabama court has jurisdiction. Article IV, Section 140 of the Alabama Constitution describes the organization of the Court and the scope of its jurisdiction.

The Court's nine justices, including the Chief Justice, are elected for six years. To be eligible, a candidate must be no older than 70, have a license to practice law in Alabama, and reside in Alabama for at least one year. If a judge retires, resigns, dies, or resigns before his term expires, the Alabama Governor will appoint a replacement. In order to retain their seat, that judge must stand in the next general election, which will take place at least one year after his appointment. Impeachment of a judge requires either impeachment or an investigation by the Judicial Inquiry Commission, which leads to a complaint with the Alabama Court of Judiciary.

The Alabama Supreme Court has numerous regulations governing procedures and practices in courts across the state. These include rules of evidence, civil proceedings, appeal proceedings, administration of justice and disciplinary proceedings. The Court of Justice also enacted seven cannons of legal ethics to regulate the actions of judges in the state.
