from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Suvalkija (also Sūduva in reference to the Sudauer tribe ) is one of the four or five ethnographic regions of Lithuania .

From 1994 to 2010, Suvalkija was divided into the Marijampolė County and part of the Alytus County . Until the First World War , Suvalkiija also included the areas around the eponymous city of Suwałki , now Poland .

The Suvalkija is a strongly agricultural region due to its comparatively good soils.

The Lithuanian dialect spoken in this area forms the basis of the modern Lithuanian language .
