Suzie Q (dance step)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suzie Q (or Suzy Q ) is the name of a dance step used in the Big Apple , Lindy Hop , and other dances. In line dancing , this step is known as the heel twist (actually refers to the 2nd step) or the grind walk . This step is also carried out in jazz dance and salsa .

The step is originally from a 1930s party dance that had the same name and was danced on the song Doin 'the Suzie-Q by Lil Hardin Armstrong in 1936 .

An obituary published in The Salt Lake Tribune on September 21, 2008 for Susie Jane Dwyer (maiden name Quealy) (4/24/1915 - 9/17/2008) in San Francisco states that "The popular hit of the time, Doin ' the Susie-Q , was written in her honor ”.

The step

The feet are alternately crossed and moved sideways, accompanied by pivoting movements as follows.

  • On the 1, the right foot is placed with the heel over the left foot and the weight is on the heel with the toes pointing in the air.
  • On the 2 the heel is pivoted, the toes of the right foot swing to the right while a small step to the side is taken with the left foot, but almost in place or even the weight is shifted only to the left foot or it becomes a gone back a little.

Step 1 can also be accompanied with a slight wave on the left toe.

On the first step one of the following can be added:

  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 as often as you like
  • or
    • On the 3, move your right foot to the right
    • On the 4, close your feet or cross your left foot over your right foot
    • Repeat steps 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • or (change of direction)
    • On the 3, step left with your right foot
    • We are waiting for the 4
    • 5, 6, 7, 8, do one of the three patterns with the other foot

Hand gesture

The hands are interlocked and pump up and down or from one side to the other in time with the music. The arm and hand movements can be varied.

Suzy Q as a partner dance
