The Svartsengi volcanic system is located in Iceland . It is located in the southwest of the country on the Reykjanes peninsula north of the fishing village of Grindavík .

Svartsengi volcanic system

The volcanic system lies between the mountains Þorbjörn and Sýlingafell , also called Svartsengisfell . It is also assigned to the Reykjanes volcanic system by some geologists .

A high temperature area is located at the foot of the Sýlingafell, other springs on the slope of the Þorbjörn.

In January 2020, an uplift of the area around Þorbjörn at a rate of 3–4 mm per day was observed within a few days, which was associated with the occurrence of swarms of earthquakes in the region and may be explained by the rise of magma underground.

Svartsengi geothermal power plant

The energy of this volcano has been used in the Svartsengi power station since 1978 . This distributes hot water & a. to households in the vicinity of (Grindavík) and produces electricity.

Bláa Lónið

The overflow of this power station in the lava field was initially used by locals as a bath. When the healing power of the salty and mineral-rich water was recognized, a large outdoor pool was built, which is now known as Bláa Lónið (Blue Lagoon).
