The name is a short form of Svea-rike , an earlier name of Sweden (today the local language is Sverige ), which literally means something like "Kingdom of the Svear ". These were an old north Germanic tribe in central Sweden (→ Svealand ). The old Nordic name for Sweden was Svithjoth , where Svi or sve was the old word for "lake" and the country name would have the meaning of "the people of the lake". Furthermore, Svea could come from the word sweba for "free".
The name was not formed for patriotic reasons until the 19th century and was very popular in Sweden in the first half of the 20th century. He has been elected occasionally since around 1960. A Swedish saint Svea is born on 08/14. thought. The mother Svea (Swedish Moder Svea ) describes the Swedish national allegory in the form of a woman.
