Svendborg Værft
Svendborg Værft A / S shipyard in the Danish city of Svendborg existed from 1907 to 2001.
history
The roots of the shipyard go back to J. Ring-Andersen Skibsværft , which was founded in 1867 by shipbuilder Jørgen Ring-Andersen as a wooden shipyard in Svendborg .
After experience in iron shipbuilding had been gained in the original shipyard, Ring Andersens Staalskibsværft (Steel Shipyard) was founded in 1907 .
In 1916 the company was converted into a public limited company and has since operated under the name A / S Svendborg Skibsværft og Maskinbyggeri . During the time of its existence, numerous different types of ships and ship engines were built in the shipyard.
In addition to special shipbuilding, the company made a name for itself in the construction of series ships . In addition, a ship repair department with floating docks with a load capacity of up to 15,000 tons was operated. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the shipyard built the four ships of the Thetis class for the Danish Navy .
In 1999 the company went bankrupt after a long dry spell, but was initially able to reopen as Repair Yard Svendborg A / S through local investors and with a considerably reduced workforce . This successor company also got into financial difficulties and was subsequently closed in 2001. The company premises were later taken over by the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas .
A total of around 200 ships were built at the shipyard.
