Svensk uppslagsbok

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Svensk uppslagsbok (freely translated: "Swedish Encyclopedia" or "Swedish Reference Book ") is a well-known Swedish universal encyclopedia , of which two editions were published between 1929 and 1955. Gunnar Carlquist (1889–1963) was the editor-in-chief of both editions .

1st edition

The first edition was published between 1929 and 1937 and comprises 30 volumes and a supplementary volume. The publication was issued by Baltiska förlaget AB, but in 1931 the rights were transferred to another company, Svensk uppslagsbok AB. The volumes of the encyclopedia were published in Malmö . In the foreword, which was written in February 1929, it was specifically pointed out that the key principle behind the creation of the “Swedish Encyclopedia” was to attract exclusively renowned experts in various fields as article authors. Almost all of their articles, even small ones, are signed. The publisher had acquired the right to translate and revise articles from the forthcoming 7th edition of Meyer's Konversations-Lexikon , but all translated articles were edited, supplemented and signed by Swedish scholars. In 1939 the 1st edition of the encyclopedia was reissued with minimal changes.

2nd edition

The second, completely revised edition was published between 1947 and 1955 and comprised 32 volumes. The publication was carried out by the same company, but renamed Förlagshuset Norden AB in 1945. In December 2009, the second edition was digitized and published freely accessible on the Internet, but without color images and without correction of the text.
