swMATH

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

swMATH is a service that provides information about high quality mathematical software. It offers free access to a large database with information on existing mathematical software systems and packages as well as references to software-relevant mathematical publications.

history

The service was jointly developed by the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach (MFO), FIZ Karlsruhe and other mathematical research institutions in Germany. The development of the service was funded by the Leibniz Association from 2011 to 2013 . swMATH is maintained and further developed by FIZ Karlsruhe together with partners. The project has been continued by FIZ Karlsruhe, the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum Berlin (ZIB) and the MODAL research campus since 2015.

aims

Mathematical software is an emerging area of mathematical research and at the same time an essential bridge between mathematics and applications in other sciences as well as in industry, services and administration. A main goal of swMATH is to describe and index the content and other important features of the most important software packages, thus helping to overcome the difficulties of finding suitable mathematical software for research or applications. The software itself is not saved by swMATH.

services

The information about the software in swMATH usually includes the name, a short description, classification code, keywords and links to relevant publications that cite the software. If available, the URL of the homepage, the name of the developer, information on versions, software and hardware requirements and dependencies are also given. Each software is given a permanent identifier, which enables the software to be clearly referenced.

A special feature of swMATH is its publication-based approach. This means that bibliographical information from publications in the database zbMATH that refer to mathematical software is analyzed and used to describe the software. For each software, the list of peer-reviewed articles that refer to it is given: In this way, the embedding of the software in its mathematical context is achieved. The list of linked publications is at the same time an indicator of the relevance of software in various areas.

swMATH indexes around 30,000 software packages with 400,000 links in 210,000 scientific publications (05/2020). Access to swMATH is free. Anyone can suggest new software or releases.
