Sweti Petar (also "Bird Island") is the smaller of the two Black Sea islands that are a few kilometers north of Sozopol in Sozopol Bay in the Gulf of Burgas in Bulgaria . With an area of 1.5 hectares, Sweti Petar is one of the smaller of the five Black Sea islands in the country. The island bears the name of the apostle Peter , who is called Sweti Petar in Bulgarian ( Bulgarian Свети Петър ; translated "Saint Petar"). Not far is the island of Sweti Ivan .

history

In ancient times the two islands were still connected and part of the Greek city of Apollonia . Since there is no written evidence, it is believed that a natural event divided the former island. The island of Sveti Petar is mentioned for the first time in the 19th century. Archaeological excavations in the 1980s uncovered the remains of a chapel from the time of the Bulgarian Revival .

Today the islands of Sweti Petar and Sweti Iwan are part of a nature reserve ; over 70 species of birds nest there. Most are protected and are on the Bulgarian Red List . Sveti Petar is also home to the largest colony of herring gulls in Bulgaria. That is the reason for the nickname of the island - the "bird island".
