The Swiss Medical Students' Association (swimsa) is a student association of Swiss medical students. It represents its members from the student councils of the medical faculties of Basel, Bern, Freiburg im Üechtland, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich (University and Federal Institute of Technology) at national and international level.
history
In 1917, the medical student councils in Switzerland merged to form the Association of Swiss Clinics (VDSK).
In 1951 the VDSK and associations from six other countries founded the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Associations) in Copenhagen, Denmark , which from then on represented the interests of medical students on an international level.
As part of a reform , the VDSK was transferred to the Association of Swiss Medical Students (VSM). IFMSA-Siwtzerland later broke away from the VSM and from then on organized independent exchanges for medical students.
In 2006 there were negotiations between the VMS and IFMSA-Switzerland. The two organizations reunited under the name Swiss Medical Students' Association (swimsa). From then on, IFMSA-Switzerland called itself swimsa Exchanges and, as a de jure association, remained independent of swimsa. Other founding members of swimsa were the project "Achtung Liebe" and Gruhu, an association from Zurich that organizes clinical internships in predominantly African countries for medical students.
In 2014 the swimsa exchanges were dissolved and integrated into the swimsa.
Members and projects
The student councils of the faculties of Basel, Bern, Freiburg, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich are considered members of swimsa with voting rights at the assembly of delegates.
The projects are members without voting rights at the assembly of delegates. 10 projects are currently members of swimsa. Some of the projects have their own statutes and are therefore independent associations.

activities
Siwmsa is the official representation of Swiss dentistry and human medicine students and has a seat on commissions, for example at the SMIFK (Swiss Medical Interfaculty Commission) or the Federal Office of Public Health . She organizes international student exchanges and takes part in IFMSA events. She runs numerous projects in the areas of public health, medical education, reproductive health and human rights. The swimsa organizes the Swiss Medical Students' Convention (SMSC) twice a year. A national training weekend takes place once a year.
The swimsa awards two awards: the You Rock swimsa Award and the Project Award.
With the You Rock swimsa Award, people are honored for their extraordinary commitment within swimsa. It is awarded twice a year during the Swiss Medical Students' Convention (SMSC). The candidates are proposed by the board and elected by the delegates' assembly.
The swimsa Project Award honors the commitment within a project that is organized and led by Swiss medical students. The prize is awarded once a year at the SMSC by a jury proposed by the board.
