history

Headquarters on the Upper Peak Forest Canal in New Mills.

It started operations in the early 1920s at a market stall in Hackney, London, where Maurice and Alfred Matlow were selling jelly candies directly. They built a small factory in east London in 1928 and became known as the Matlow Brothers, who made jellies and chews. In 1933 the company merged with a competing manufacturer, David Dee, who specialized in carbonated tablet candy (although the company was not officially converted to Swizzels Matlow Ltd. until 1975).

During the bombing of London in 1940, the company was forced to move north to a disused wick factory in New Mills, Derbyshire, where it still stands today. Parma Violets were introduced in 1946. Love Hearts were introduced in 1954. Drumsticks were introduced in 1957.

In 2004 hydrogenated fats were completely avoided. In 2009 no artificial flavors were added.

Products

A selection of Swizzels Matlow sweets.

Refreshers

The most popular product from Swizzels Matlow Ltd. are the "refreshers". These are flat chewy candies with an effervescent powder in the middle, available in lemon and strawberry flavors. They are officially named New Refreshers to avoid brand confusion with Barratt's Compressed Tablet Refreshers candy.

Fizzers

Fizzers are rolled tablet candies that bubble and dissolve when placed in soda. They resemble American candy smarties (called rockets in Canada) in appearance.

Parma Violets

Parma Violets are disc-shaped candies similar to fizzers, but without their fizzy drink. Swizzels Matlow has also released a line from Giant Parma Violets.

Drumsticks

The drumstick sweet is a tough lolly with a length of approx. 5 cm. It is available in two flavors, milk and raspberry, and in many special editions, such as B. with lime and orange flavor. In 2012, Swizzels Matlow launched "Drumstick Squashies", foam-like chewy candies with the same taste as the Drumstick Lolly. Several flavor variations, such as B. Bubblegum, have been distributed.
