Symbolic rating scale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A symbolic rating scale is a special form of a rating scale. It uses scale marks in the form of symbols , such as smileys, and thus distinguishes itself from the visual analogue scale (VAS) and numerical rating scale (NRS).

Purpose in empirical social research

Find symbolic rating scales a. Use where test subjects in a test or survey procedure do not seem able to provide the abstraction necessary for numerical rating scales to convert their own opinions into a numerical relative. This is especially true of young children . Another reason for using symbolic rating scales could be that the target group cannot read ( illiterate people ). It makes the evaluation easier if the scaling in question meets the " interval scale " level , for which the symbols must be set up equidistantly.
