Syme (network)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Syme is a social network in which the communicated content between the participants is encrypted end-to-end .

History and structure

It was founded in November 2013 by the three students Louis Mullie, Jonathan Hershon St-Jean and Christophe Marois from McGill University in Montreal in Canada. The name Syme is based on a character from George Orwell's 1984 .

The decision to develop their own social network had come to them because they mostly communicated via Facebook and it bothered them that Facebook could read everything. In order to get as much trust from the user as possible, all messages would be encrypted before being sent to a server. They published the source code in order to give other developers the opportunity to examine the project and, if necessary, to participate in the project.

Syme is available as a browser extension for Chromium and Google Chrome , extensions for Safari or Firefox are planned.

As with other social networks, many things happen in groups at Syme, but at Syme these are password-protected. Such groups can only be accessed with this password and an invitation. Although privacy is paramount at Syme, the network still collects data, such as IP addresses or other metadata , that make users clearly identifiable.

Over time, the social network became more and more quiet until it disappeared from the scene in 2018, but since it was an open source project, the program code can still be used.
