Broken Star of David on the memorial

The synagogue in Achim , a town in the Verden district in Lower Saxony , was built in 1864 or 1874 and destroyed in 1938.

It was donated by Elias Moses Alexander and stood on his private property. The synagogue was similar to a residential building.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior was smashed and burned in front of the building. The synagogue building was not set on fire because it was feared that the fire could spread to neighboring houses. The church was sold a little later and served as a warehouse for paint. Eventually the synagogue was demolished in 1987.

Commemoration

At the location of the destroyed synagogue, on Synagogenweg at the corner of Anspacherstraße, a memorial with the following inscription has been commemorating the city's Jewish citizens since 1990 : “In memory of our Jewish fellow citizens and the synagogue that stood here. It was vandalized on November 9th. Forgetting leads to exile. However, remembering is the secret of liberation. "
