Former Lippstadt synagogue

The synagogue in Lippstadt was built in 1852 opposite the collegiate church, which is now only in ruins, and was largely destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . The remains of the synagogue are on David-Gans-Straße (formerly Stiftsstraße 7), today a memorial plaque and a model made of stainless steel remind of the former church of the Jewish community of Lippstadt, which no longer exists .

history

The Lippstadt synagogue was inaugurated on July 30, 1852 by the approximately 200 members of the Jewish community. It served as a place of worship as well as a meeting place and study place and until 1910 as a school.

Like many other synagogues, the Lippstadt synagogue was desecrated and set on fire during the November pogroms 1938 on the night of November 9-10, 1938, the so-called “Reichskristallnacht”. Only the walls of the synagogue remained. The stepped gables of the gable walls were removed in 1957 and the building was roofed over and used as a storage room.

Stainless steel model of the Jewish house of prayer

In 1985 a plaque was put up to commemorate the synagogue, and on June 12, 1989 the remains of the former synagogue were entered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Lippstadt. According to the entry, the monument value refers to the remaining parts of the building of the former synagogue as well as the outbuilding in the garden used as a school toilet and changing room for the rabbi.

In 2008 a stainless steel model of the Jewish prayer house was set up on Stiftstrasse. In September 2010 the artist Heide Weidele designed the wall of the synagogue with a seven-armed menorah and an almond blossom .
