Calvörde synagogue

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Calvörde Synagogue was the synagogue of the small Jewish community in the market town of Calvörde . The building is located at Neustadtstrasse 7 and is a listed building .

Architecture and history

The building complex consists of a narrow two-storey half-timbered house from the late 18th century and a two-storey half - timbered building with brick infill facing the courtyard . A staircase with baluster boards leads from the courtyard to the upper floor of the half-timbered building, formerly the prayer room of the Jewish community .

Interior and terrain

The building has been preserved to this day. The size is about 7 meters by 12 meters. In the past few decades it served as a plumber's workshop . The interior has been changed several times in the last 200 years. Old walls have been removed and new ones drawn. There are several indications that the building was originally used for religious purposes:

  • Behind the middle door (half-timbered building in the courtyard) a staircase leads to the upper floor. The railing has baroque decorative elements.
  • There are three doors on the entrance side. The two outer ones have a round arch. It could have been a matter of separate access for men and women.
  • The design of the window facade on the south side of the longitudinal front is not common in the local area for stables or workshops. There are five windows of the same size, about 1 meter by 1.50 meters.

The (front) half-timbered house has been inhabited again since 2010.
