local community

Since the 17th century, residents of the Jewish faith have been recorded in Klein-Krotzenburg. An independent congregation was not formed until 1871. It initially made do with a prayer room, but in 1872 it built its own cemetery . Before the First World War, the congregation had about 30 members.

synagogue

In 1913 the community was able to inaugurate a synagogue on the site of the former prayer room. It also had a mikveh , which was filled in after the Second World War . The main entrance was on the west side. The building is a rectangular hall building to which another rectangular structure is attached, in which there was an entrance and stairs to the gallery for the women. The roof is strongly curved and the upper row of windows is formed by standing ovals. Overall, the building has echoes of Art Nouveau .

On November 10, 1938, the synagogue was damaged by an arson attack and the interior was destroyed. But the building remained standing. It was taken over by the political community and subsequently served as a building yard.

The building was renovated from 1995 to 1998 and has been used as a meeting place and memorial ever since. The building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
